Assistant professor, assistant professor with PhD program, or associate professor for SILA Bachelor in Biology at Ilisimatusarfik.
Do you want to be part of a small, passionate and collaborative team at Ilisimatusarfik's new SILA Bachelor in Biology program?

In February 2025, the first class of biology students started on the SILA program. Today, the program consists of a team of four permanent biologists and 12 students. With reference to the agreement regarding the job structure for lecturers and researchers at Ilisimatusarfik of 1 November 2010, we are now looking for another team member to teach on the SILA program - with employment from 1 May 2025 or by agreement.

If the applicant has holds a PhD degree, the position includes 45% research time. If the applicant has holds a master's degree, there is the possibility of a position as either assistant professor or assistant professor with PhD program.

Job tasks:
  • The main job tasks consist of teaching the courses SIKU and QILALUGAQ, which mainly focus on climate change and living resources management. This includes coordinating teaching activities in collaboration with a our team of permanent lecturers.
  • The lecturer must participate in the development of course plans for SILA bachelor Bachelor in biology, especially for the courses SIKU and QILALUGAQ.
  • The work will involve coordination, meeting activities and follow-up, communication about the process via website, newsletters and other media in close collaboration with the head of department manager.
  • Ad hoc job tasks include development of the program and the department, as well as supervision supervising of students.
Our expectations to the applicant:
  • Holds a master's or PhD degree in a relevant subject with core expertise in climate and living resources management.
  • Has intimate knowledge of Greenland and the Greenlandic education system.
  • Has some teaching experience.
  • Wants to contribute to developing a unique Greenlandic approach to natural science education, and sees opportunities and strengths in Greenland that can help create a successful education that targets Greenlandic youth and the Greenlandic labor market.
  • Keen to help create a healthy work and study culture at the SILA Department and Institute of Health & Nature.
  • Can speak Greenlandic, or will be able to develop a basic relevant vocabulary in Greenlandic for use in the program.
  • Practical experience with climate negotiations, indigenous peoples and governance will be an advantage.

In addition to the SILA Bachelor of Biology program, the Department Institute of Health and & Nature is also responsible for the bachelor's nursing program, clinical supervisor training and some various courses.
The department institute also includes the Greenland Center for Health Research, which is an active center in development. The department institute has 7-10 permanent employees, some adjunct assigned professors, associate professors and affiliated researchers.
There are currently, we have about approximately 45-50 bachelor students, and 10-12 PhD students at the departmentinstitute.
The research environment at the department institute is interdisciplinary, and is based on the connection between health and nature.

Assessment and recruitment procedure for assistant professor and associate professor positions.
Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee in accordance with applicable rules. Applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee after the application deadline. The committee processes the applications received and submits a recommendation to the head of department.

The employment period at the assistant professor level is 6 years with the possibility of a 2-year extension. After a positive associate professor assessment, the employee can then move to a permanent position as a senior lecturer.

The employment period at assistant professor level is normally for a period of 4 years with the possibility of a 2-year extension. After a positive associate professor assessment, the employee can then move to a permanent position as associate professor.

Assistant professor with PhD programme: Appointment may be made as an assistant professor for a period of up to 6 years if it is agreed at the time of appointment that a PhD programme will be included in the assistant professor period. It is a prerequisite for employment an assistant professor with a PhD programme that the applicable requirements for enrolment in the PhD programme are met.

Employment as an associate professor can take place on the condition of a positive associate professor assessment before employment or if the applicant has obtained an associate professor assessment within the subject area elsewhere.

About Ilisimatusarfik
Ilisimatusarfik, the University of Greenland, was established in 1987 and currently offers 12 different degree programmes, including a few part-time programmes at diploma and master's level. Ilisimatusarfik is an Arctic university that creates knowledge and innovation in a rapidly developing region. The Board is the university's top management. Day-to-day management is handled by the Rector and University Director. The four institutes are led by a head of institute, who is advised by a institute council.

About the Central Administration
Central Administration serves the entire university. It is headed by the University Director. The Central Administration has institutes in Ilimmarfik and Ilinniarfissuaq. The institute work closely with the academic units, but also co-operate with each other. The Central Administration's tasks are: study administration, personnel administration, serving the Board and Academic Council as well as other service functions for the university's employees and students. The Central Administration is also responsible for the building operations of Ilimmarfik.

Salary and terms of employment
Salary and terms of employment, including the right to travel to and from work and relocation, in accordance with the agreement/collective agreement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organization applicable at the time of joining.

Housing
Staff housing will not be provided for the position. If an applicant already has staff housing through employment with the Government of Greenland, the right to assigned staff housing is retained. The staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated at the end of the employment relationship.
