Ilisimatusarfik, located in Nuuk, is seeking, depending on the combination of applicants, one or more associate professors, assistant professors, teaching associate professors and teaching assistant professors for the Department of Law. The positions, which may be full-time or part-time, have a start date of 1 August 2026 or later by mutual agreement.
The Department of Law offers opportunities for research and teaching across all disciplines of law. Both research and teaching are expected to focus on Greenlandic regulation in the dogmatic disciplines and on Greenlandic society and Arctic conditions within international law, the sociology of law, etc. It will be an advantage – though not a requirement – if you have experience in interdisciplinary collaboration or are interested in engaging in collaborations with the university’s research centers. Further, there will be teaching and supervisory obligations at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as examinations.
There are currently approximately 70 students enrolled at the growing law school. At Ilisimatusarfik, teaching can take place in Greenlandic, Danish and English. However, it is a prerequisite that you can speak, or are willing to learn, Greenlandic or Danish for teaching purposes within a few years.
As both full-time and part-time staff are expected to be available to students at Ilisimatusarfik and to engage in collegial cooperation, you are expected to have or establish residence in Greenland upon taking up the position.
Qualification requirements:
- Associate and assistant professor: PhD and skills within research, teaching and communication equivalent to the specific position.
- Teaching associate professors and teaching assistant professors: Master's degree in law.
Duties:Your duties will primarily be:
- teaching at the law school in courses relevant to your academic profile and interests.
- supervising and examining students writing a Bachelor’s project or Master’s thesis at the law school, and occasionally similar from other educational programmes at Ilisimatusarfik.
- research, including publication and academic dissemination within your area of expertise. Emphasis is placed on your research and dissemination being oriented towards Greenland, international law and/or the Arctic.
- Further development of the law school in collaboration with your colleagues.
- As a university employee, you should make your knowledge available to society, e.g. by answering questions from the media when relevant.
- Academic assessments.
- Contributing to the administration of the law school and participating in collegial cooperation.

Appendix 5: For assistant professors/associate professors: Brief description of previous research and, if relevant, an outline of possible future research.
Appendix 6: Teaching portfolio with relevant documentation of teaching qualifications, including any University teaching and learning programs attended (or equivalent), as well as any reflections on one’s own past and future teaching activities
Appendix 7: For assistant professors/associate professors: Documentation of research dissemination.
Appendix 8: For assistant professors/associate professors: Up to five publications (chapter or article length).
Assessment and recruitment procedure for associate professors, assistant professors, teaching associate professors.Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee in accordance with the applicable rules. After the application deadline, applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee. The committee will review the applications received and submit its recommendation to the head of department, who will then invite the candidate(s) for an interview.
Recruitment procedure for teaching assistant professors.The head of institute appoints an advisory recruitment committee in collaboration with the department. The committee assists the management in selecting applicants for interviews and in making recommendations for recruitment.
About employmentEmployment as a
teaching assistant professor is for a period of six years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. Following a positive assessment as a teaching associate professor, the employee may be appointed to a permanent position as a teaching associate professor.
Employment as a
teaching associate professor may take place subject to a positive assessment prior to appointment, or if the applicant has obtained a relevant teaching associate professor assessment elsewhere.
Employment as an
assistant professor is normally for a period of four years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. Following a positive assessment for associate professor, the employee may transition to a permanent position as associate professor.
Employment as an
associate professor may take place subject to a positive associate professor assessment prior to appointment, or if the applicant has obtained an associate professor assessment within the relevant academic field elsewhere.

About the Central AdministrationCentral Administration serves the entire university. It is headed by the University Director. The Central Administration has institutes in Ilimmarfik and Ilinniarfissuaq. The institute works closely with the academic units but also co-operates with each other. The Central Administration's tasks are study administration, personnel administration, serving the Board and Academic Council as well as other service functions for the university's employees and students. The Central Administration is also responsible for the building operations of Ilimmarfik.
